Grin and bracket

The Tournament.

Two words that in the past have dominated everything I’ve ever done in the month of March. This year, however, Greg and I are clueless. I get the feeling this is going to be the best we’ve ever done with our picks.

In the past we’ve fretted over every pick with at least some knowledge of each team at our disposal. This year, we’ve fretted over every pick while taking wild guesses (don’t believe us? listen to our meandering, hour-plus long podcast about the brackets). With this built-in excuse, we go forward confidently.

Still, there won’t be two more devastated souls than Greg and myself should even one of our first-round picks not pan out. Despite years of heartbreak - we must be 3-47 in games that are decided in the final seconds in the last decade - we believe we are completely right. Despite knowing less and less about college basketball each year, and despite never getting over crushing defeats each tournament, we soldier on with a belief in ourselves that we’ll pick every single game correctly.

The games are about to tip, and any confidence I have is quickly waning. At about 12:19 p.m. today, I’ll have zero confidence in any of our selections, including the 1 vs. 16 games.

Still, here’s what we need to happen: USC going to the Elite 8; St. Mary’s upsetting Miami and Texas; Drake getting past UConn; UCLA winning it all.

Wish us luck.
